Volpe undergoes Shoulder Surgery

THE BRONX, NY — New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe underwent surgery on a partially torn labrum on Tuesday, sources confirmed the report of the New York Post.
Volpe, 24, underwent another season full of struggles in 2025 with both his offensive performance and defensive performance declining. Volpe was the AL’s 2023 Gold Glove Award winner in his rookie season, with his defense improving in 2024, but after sustaining an injury in early May, his defense was never really the same, though the injury was not in Volpe’s throwing shoulder.

“Not much. I feel like he’s been in a good spot physically.” Manager Aaron Boone said on September 11th, 2024 after it was initially revealed that Volpe was playing injured. “I think everybody deals with certain things, so it’s impossible to say like this affected something this much or didn’t at all. I don’t how can you possibly know that, but I don’t think it’s been a major factor in his performance, or his ability to swing the bat, or his ability to go to the post every day. That’s my sense.”
“They’ll just repeat imaging at the end of the year and see where he’s at,” Cashman said on September 12th, “but as of right now, there’s no surgery recommended. There’s not even an IL recommendation.”
The New York Yankees actually allowed a player to play through a very serious injury and even denied that Volpe would need even an IL stint, forget surgery. This has been an ongoing issue for the Yankees in terms of handling player injuries, and should be addressed this offseason.
Boone and Cashman both meet the media today in their 16th-annual post-mortem press conference and provided further insight on Volpe’s surgery.
Manager Aaron Boone said that Volpe is in a four-week no throw following the procedure and a six-week no diving at short as well.
“For the overwhelming majority of the year, it wasn’t affecting his play” Boone said. Boone also doubled-down about keeping Volpe in the lineup.
Brian Cashman contradicted Boone’s statement, pointing out the obvious by saying “Yes, it was affecting him.”
“I believe in the player still, we believe in the player.” said Cashman. “It doesn’t mean that we don’t play with all aspects of roster assessments. He’s 24 years old, I don’t think New York’s stage is too big for him. He’s still finding his way. The age, there’s a lot of value to reminding yourself of that. You watch the NFL, these number 1 pick quarterbacks that franchises put everything in…you see players that you expect a lot early on from, but then they’re not living up to their growing pains. Then they wind up in a different environment, now they’re leading their teams. Sometimes, this isn’t linear. It’s also not guaranteed, and that’s why it’s always fair to assess what you have. That, I promise you, always takes place.”
Regarding his status as starting shortstop when he returns from the IL, Boone said “Yeah, he’s right in the mix to do that.”
Volpe will begin the season on the IL, according to Brian Cashman. The hope is that Volpe will be ready at the end of April, at worst May.
