The New York Yankees have made a trade for a Marlins pitcher. Not Sandy Alcantara, not Edward Cabrera, though the hall would make you think he did. No, the Yankees got former first-round pick Ryan Weathers for OF Dillon Lewis, OF Brendan Jones, INF Dylan Jasso, and IF Juan Matheus.
Weathers, 26, has a lot of upside and potential. During the 2025 season, he posted a respectable 3.99 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP over eight starts. While he has dealt with health-related interruptions in the past, his 2024 campaign (3.63 ERA in 16 starts) proved that he can be a highly effective mid-rotation starter when active.
Beyond his recent performance, Weathers brings a family legacy to the Bronx, as he is the son of David Weathers, who pitched for the 1996 World Series champion Yankees. This trade is viewed as a low-risk, high-reward move for Brian Cashman, as Weathers remains under team control through the 2028 season. By acquiring a young, high-velocity lefty for a package of bench-depth prospects, the Yankees have fortified their rotation with a high-upside arm who is just entering his prime.
Weathers Fit in The Bronx
Weathers is a project that the Yankees' pitching lab likely covets due to his elite raw tools. He ranks in the 86th percentile for fastball velocity, averaging 96.8 mph and occasionally touching 99 mph. This power-lefty profile is rare and provides a tactical advantage in the AL East. His ability to generate ground balls (43.5%) will be vital in the hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium, helping to mitigate the "short porch" in right field.
With Weathers being a fly ball pitcher, Yankee Stadium could affect his overall numbers. His road numbers in 2025 were not as good as his home numbers. Below is a projection of what his numbers were in Miami compared to what they would have been if he pitched all his games in Yankee Stadium.
The Bronx will take away doubles and triples, but will add to his home run total.
It will be interesting if the Yankees use Weathers as a starter or a reliever, or if this deal could lead way to a bigger trade soon.
