The Mets are coming off a 2025 season where they underperformed insanely and missed the postseason. They finished with a 83-79 record at the end of the season.
On June 13th, the Mets had the best record in baseball and fell off. The New York Post reported on clubhouse issues between Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto, as well as Lindor's relationship with Jeff McNeil.
Offseason Walks
The Mets began their offseason by shipping Brandon Nimmoto the Texas Rangers for the now light-hitting Marcus Semien. Then, they signed Devin Williamsaway from the crosstown Yankees with the intention for him to be a setup man.
That plan has since changed.
The Mets were planning to presume former closer Edwin Díaz in free agency, before he signed with the Dodgers. It was reported that Díaz did not take his offer back to the Mets because he was hurt by the aforementioned Williams signing.
The Mets then had interest in closer Robert Suárez before he signed with the division rival Atlanta Braves. The Mets did not make an offer.
They then let franchise icon Pete Alonso walk in free agency to the Baltimore Orioles. This set Mets fans in a frenzy calling for President of Baseball Operations David Sterns' job.
That's right Mets fans, your career Met is still Ed Kranepool.
Offseason Adds and Rumors
The Mets response to Alonso's departure -- signing Jorge Polanco to a two-year, $40 million contract. Polanco is a nice player, but not the best defensive player. The plan is to put Polanco at first base for the 2026 season. So far in his career, Polanco has played just one game at first base.
The biggest need for the Mets is starting pitching, but the team has been reluctant to go beyond three years with any starter. In order to land a starter at the top of the market in free agency, like Framber Valdez, the Mets are going to need to waiver on this stance.
The Mets might also make the pivot to bringing in a starter via trade, but according to The Athletic, league executives believe the Mets will be reluctant to deal top prospects.
Other reports have come out that the Mets are talking to the Padres about some of their relievers, such as Mason Miller.
My Plan
The Mets cant be in a retool with Soto in his prime and Lindor not getting any older.
Sign INF Kazuma Okamoto from Japan. Right-handed bat that plays solid defense.
The issue -- Okamoto might command more than a three-year deal.
Aquire a top-end starter (i.e. Freddy Peralta, Tarik Skubal, etc.)
The issue -- will other teams take the package over other teams, like the Dodgers.
Find a high-end reliever, with closing experience to pair with Williams
The Mets can afford to use one of Jett Williams or Carson Benge in the outfield, at least to begin the season.
