John Harbaugh is the coach of the New York Football Giants. Let that sink in. Harbaugh impressed in his opening press conference Tuesday. There were multiple points in the press conference that Harbaugh's presence felt like a breath of fresh air.
Harbaugh's Intro to the Giants Job
"They say New York is a different kind of place, and I would say that's probably true, man." Harbaugh said in his opening speech. "This is pretty amazing right here. This is incredible. To see those players back there, see those guys smiling and ready to go to work, that gets me fired up, too."
"It's a profound honor to be entrusted with the responsibility of coaching the New York Football Giants."
Harbaugh on his relationship with Schoen
Part of the holdup in the contract being signed was about Joe Schoen and the reporting structure. In Baltimore, Harbaugh reported directly to ownership, a structure he was familiar with. That won't change in New York. Nevertheless, Harbaugh believes him and Schoen will collaborate well. "No question. Probably the conversations themselves is what led me to believe there would be great collaboration." Said Harbaugh. "Obviously, you get to know Joe, and we started talking ball, and you see he's a football man."
"I expect it to be phenomenally great." He added later on. "I think it's going to be incredible, I really do. I already know because we've had a chance to start talking to each other. You work with new people all the time."
Harbaugh on the Current Giants Roster
The first main point about the Giants current roster Harbaugh addressed was quarterback Jaxson Dart. "I'm excited about Jaxson Dart." Harbaugh said. "I like his talent, skill set, all the things he's accomplished, but more than that, I like who he is and what he's about. To me, he's about football. This young guy loves football. He wants to talk football all the time and that's kind of what I like doing too. So, I think we're going to have a lot of great conversations. I can't wait to get started with him."
One thing I noticed throughout the presser was how much Harbaugh hammered home that the players on his roster need to love the game of football.
"Well, there's a lot of qualities that go into it." He said. "Joe has got lists and lists of qualities for all different positions and all that that you'd be looking for.
"To me, the number one thing is we have to have guys that love football. You just have to. It's football. What are we here for?." Harbaugh added. "What do we do? What is this building for? It's for football. This is a football team. We need guys that love everything about football."
Harbaugh did his homework before taking the Giants job. The Giants current core is easy to manuver and win with.
"I see a lot of really good players when I look at the roster." He said. "Well, not the roster so much as the tape. That's where you look, you look at the tape. That's what shows you, right, guys? It shows you. It's on the tape. So, I look at the tape and I see a lot of good football players."
The Family Help
John was not the only one who investigated the Giants roster prior to him taking the job. His father, Jack Harbaugh -- former Michigan and Kentucky coach -- did as well.
"He calls me up about three days into this process and he goes, you watch the Giants?" John Harbaugh said. "I'm like, yeah, I watched them. I watched them. He goes, you see the way they come off the ball on offense, you see that offensive line, you see the offense, see those guys, see that quarterback, you see that defense, see that front, you see those guys flying around back there? I'm like, yeah, I saw it. So, when my dad told me, I knew it was true. We have a chance. We have a chance."
Harbaugh Wants to Win
Harbaugh wants to win. He expects to make the postseason in year one. The Giants have some really good players on the roster. Now, him and Schoen need to work together
"To me, it goes back to every single day." Harbaugh said. "You just never know what the next day is going to bring. You've got to understand that it's really not about what you face. Sometimes the triumphs are much more dangerous than the trials. Sometimes the good times are the things that you've got to be more wary of than the tough times. We've got to do a great job of handling all the circumstances in the best possible way to keep it simple and keep in mind what's important."
Harbaugh is bringing a winning culture back to the Giants. Wednesday, he said, discussions will begin about his coaching staff. That will be another pivotal hire for the Giants to support the core the team possesses.
Time to bring the Giants back to relevance, and it starts with the head coach.
