The All-Star Game will take place in Atlanta on Tuesday, and the decision regarding the American League’s starting pitcher came down to a pair of left-handers, with Yankees manager Aaron Boone leading the AL squad. Although Yankees ace Max Fried will not participate in the game, he still played a role in selecting the AL starter.

According to Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal, Fried reached out to him personally. “He asked me if I wanted to start ,” Skubal recounted. “I think you deserve it. I was just wondering if you wanted to start it”.

Skubal initially deferred the offer, acknowledging Fried’s history of pitching in Atlanta. While scheduling conflicts will ultimately prevent Fried from appearing in the game, there is a strong sense that, even if available, Fried would have wanted Skubal to get the honor of starting.

“It was actually a really cool conversation ,” Skubal said. “It’s a very professional thing to do, and I've got a ton of respect for guys that do stuff like that”.

Fried’s gesture is an example of outstanding sportsmanship and leadership—demonstrating the professionalism and class that have defined his reputation as a player and as a Yankee.
